Located in inner London, the London Borough of Hackney has a population of in excess of 280,000 and is regarded by locals as being both [part of east London and North London. Although it is clear that human habitation of the area has been continuous for many years, the first mention of the town does not occur until the 13th century. The River Lea, which lies nearby, was considered a boundary between settlements since the Iron Age, and it is reasonable to assume that this continued during the Roman period. In fact, a Roman road, first called Ermine Street, still runs through Hackney to this day and has a number of names, including Shoreditch High Street and Kinglsand Road. After Alfred the Great’s conquest of England, the River Lea was the boundary between the historic counties of Middlesex (Hackney) and Essex. During the Tudor period, the village of Hackney gained a reputation as a rural getaway, and despite being part of the sprawling metropolis that is London, hackney still retains elements of its rural history, with over 25 conservation areas, not to mention a surprising number of local nature reserves.
Woodbury Wetlands is an 11 hectare local nature reserve in the heart of Hackney and provides a haven not only for plant flowers and wildlife, but also to local residents who can take advantage of the tranquillity of the reed fringed ponds and dykes. In addition to being home to variety of wildlife, the site also contains a variety of habitats, including reed beds, grassland, and wildflower meadow. As a result of the diverse habitats there are a variety of flowers at the site ranging from meadow foxtail to greater bird’s foot trefoil.
The Lea Valley is home to a large number of reservoirs, first created to provide clean drinking water the London’s citizens, and as a result there are a number of wetland habitats in and around Hackney.
Adjacent to Hackney lie Walthamstow Wetlands local nature reserve. This is a 211 acre local nature reserve that is recognised as an internationally important habitat for migratory birds, especially over wintering wildfowl. The wetlands are awash with flowers such as marsh marigold and goat willow. Many invertebrates are attracted to the plants and wildflowers at the site and these provide a tasty snack for the wildfowl.
Surrounded by new development and located in the heart of London, Camley Street Natural park consist of a variety of habitats including woodland, grassland and wetland, each of which are home to a diverse array of flowers which provide food and shelter for amphibians, butterflies and birds.
